94 fleetwood cranks but wont start

hey yall, last night driving my caddy something went wrong. i would hit the gas from a red light but nothing happened, it then took off like the transmission just slipped. It started riding rough then shut off about half a mile later I started it back up and it felt like it wasrunning off two cylinders.I pulled over to side of the road and just towed it to my house this morning. Now it cranks but it wont start. What are somethings i could test. I wacked the fuel tank hoping it would be the fuelpump, no luck though. I have a distributor but its the kind thats behind the water pump. thinks its called an optical spark system or somthing.havent heard to many good things about them.any input would be greatly appreciated.

would it be benifical if i put a spark tester on the end of the spark plug wire? should it be a constant spark at crank up?

I got a spark tester and went to crank the car, and the battery was dead. I jumped it and the car started right up. its was running fine. So i really dont know what went on, if i do have a problem with my distributer is it usually a problem that comes and goes? also im going to change the pulgs and wires, if i got some water in my distributor, will my plugs be black or something? what should i look for?

well i took out my altenator and tested it, it was in its best shape but wasent completly bad. Then i tested the battery. the battery had a bad cell and that was my problem, man i couldnt believe it was the battery. ive never had a battery die on me while i was driving.kind of strange, this ever happen to anyone else?

Computers require voltage to work, on occasion such as this one there was enough "battery" to crank engine but the voltage dropped too low for ecm to work. "Good Job" on figuring it out on your own.
