1987 cadillac fleetwood brougham 5.0 won't start.

she turns over but will not start. i think she also has a short somewhere since my battery kept dieing before she stopped starting up in the first place. tried to blast the carb with some cleaner and she almost cranked up, but no cigar. what could the malfunction be? what can i do to troubleshoot? i have a haynes manual but it isn't too helpful. an expert's opinion is in desperate need.

striped threads and broken bolt extractions

i have stripped threads on my alternator, also in a port on my engine block where the power steering bracket is supposed to be bolted. how may i fix the problems with that? should i use a slightly bigger screw and try to re-thread the hole? i also have a broken bolt stuck in my engine block where my power steering bracket should be fastened. what are cost efficient ways to extract the broken bolt?

you dont give us much to work with.

having a carb makes it easy to tell if you have fuel delivery. done that, right?
do you have spark at each plug?

if you have those two, you are set to go on systematic diagnostics,
step by step.

if you dont have those two, you aint going anywhere ..

For the no start condition:

1. Weak or almost dead battery or bad connections at battery
2. Check spark plugs
3. Check wires
4. Check coil distributor setc..
5. Check timing
6.Check fuel filter

Broken bolt:

1. Soak with penetrating oil
2. Clamp on a vice grip
3. Work the bolt out

Stripped threads:

1. Heli-coils
2. Time-Sert

You can get these at the auto parts stores

I assume that 5.0 V8 has a Quadrajet on it. If so the filter is in the housing where the fuel line goes in at the front of the carb. You need two wrenches to break it open. You use oposite force on each nut. Be careful not to crimp the fuel line. You may pretreat the nuts with penetrating oil. I am not sure if there is another in- line filter on that car.

[align=left]One of the best tricks I know to get a frozen bolt out of your block or anywhere else for that matter is to....Heat the bolt up with a torch to cherry red....then use a candle to slowly feed wax back into the threads.
If that won't break it free nothing will.
