Rear Shocks Failing Early
 

Hi All,
I just had to replace the rear shocks on my 04 Deville.
The left one lost most of its oil overnight. The right one was weeping just a bit (soon to fail I would guess). They both were leaking past the lower seals. I only have 40k on the clock. Seems like a very early demise for these units. I was just curious, has anyone else has had the same issue with the OEM units?
At least I have the FE1 soft ride so the shocks didn't cost me $600 each like the active sport suspension would.

The rear shock on my 2001 Deville lost it's fluid back in aug 06. The car only had 25,000 miles on it. My dealer told me that I should replace both shocks @ $574.00. I called Cadillac Customer Service and they agreed to go %50% with me. The car was already 1 year out of warranty. They did it because of the low mileage.

Yeah,
I had to replace my rear shocks on my late 2002 Deville. Alot of oil leaking from the right shock and it handled terrible on bumps and cracks. It felt like the entire rear end was going to slide off the road. When it was below 25 degrees or so the left shock just froze and wouldnt move at all. The entire left side of the car would bounce relentlessly as I drove. But it had 85,000 miles on it, so it is not a big surprise. I also have the soft ride suspension and I wanted to keep that. Not too big a deal... Much, much, better now!

At 85k shocks failing would not be a surprise to me either. At 40k yes. Anyway, it was a cheap fix. I got the pair of new ones from the dealer for $235.00. (cheaper than a parts store for once) I replaced them myself as the dealer wanted $150 for labor. Easy job. The old ones must have been failing internally for a while before they started leaking because the ride and cornering was good before, now its much better.
