Getting Ready to buy, Need quick Help

I just test drove a 1996 Deville....very nice ride...dark blue with tan cloth top....and I am so wanting to say yes!...i'll take it....but when I was driving I hit the gas hard to test for transmission for slippage..or just tranny problems....and to my suprise ..when I did...the check engine light came on and the computer read...check emmission system.!! and a weird smell came through the air vents.!....now is this a big deal problem..should I look elswhere? This car had 130,000 miles and had a new A/C compressor put in...would that explain the smell....please help....

What did it smell like?
Rotten eggs could be a bad catalytic converter.

Not so much rotten eggs...it was more like a burning smell...the check engine light stayed on ...and the car ran fine. the smell eventually went a way.????
