Engine coolant leak-'96 DeVille

Got a leak coming from somewhere in the area behind and under the front head on the driver side dripping down on some wiring..... 'course you can't see it from any direction except with a flashlight from above through an area as big as your fist.
Usually pours out after being driven and then parked, but not every time. Usually about a cupful.....
What's down there? Help...............

Yeah, I'm hoping for an easy way out, but I gotta get it checked and find out for sure.
Thanks

The water pump is on that side of the engine below the front head on a Northstar. You need a special tool to change it. If you don't get the tool it is difficult to remove the pump and you can damage the block. The water pump does not look like the conventional type you find on a OHV V8, its a small part in comparison. When you get the pump at the dealer it comes in a kit form with a few other parts to change but I can't remember what they are right now, gaskets and rad cap I think.

I was told the water pump was in that area.........also about the special tool.
Whatever it is, I'll probably be ahead to have that fixed rather than try it myself.
Thanks, guys, for the input.

The tool is just a big socket, costs $20. You need a 1/2" Johnson Bar another $15 at Walmart. Most DIYers consider the N* water pump change among the easiest they have ever done. You can search the web and get detailed instructions on how to do it, even other Cadillac Boards have the info. It is a two hour job or less to complete. At a shop or dealer I am sure you are looking at $300 or more.

Hello,
Maybe it is not that bad. I had a coolant leak from the waterpump housing a few years ago. I was ready to replace the pump but it turned out that it was only a small drip from the gasket between the waterpump housing and the cover. It was easily fixed with some RTV. I never had to actuallyremove the waterpump.

It is not a difficult job at all. Plan for a few hours and you will probably find it will take less. There was not anything difficult about it.

You may get lucky and find that your engine has the same issue.

Jon
