98 deville trction control module

My ABS and traction control dash lights appeared so I took it in and was told the module needed replacing. Expensive! I trust my mechanic but given the quirky electrical problems this make has, could it be something else?

I have a '99 Deville. I got a few traction control codes too. I turned off the traction control (from the button in the glovebox). It seemed to help. The electronics on these models are indeed touchy.

It does not seem unreasonable to me that in a 10 year old car that module would need replacing.
