01 Deville ENGINE noise!!!

OK,,,driving on I 95 in NC,,going 70 cruise control,,,start to get a noise like a flapping,,pull over,,nothing loose,,,,on acceleration it is popping like its missing,,I get to 60 mph and put on cruise,,engine never got hot,,gas milage was at 20.3,never went down. I drove it to the dealership,,,any clue?? If it got hot or milage went down I would have had it towed. I hope its a plug wire or simple problem....Milage at 117,000,,,car driven like a baby, never driven hard.New plugs at 100,000. At dealership it was putting out alot of gray smoke(it was night time).

Its in the shop,,,,I was thinking one of the 2 towers(the r one was cracked and replaced at 100,000 miles along with the plugs). The gas milage was bad then so I just dont know. Hope it is something easy and minor,,,If head gasket blew I would think it would have got hot.

OK,,Im in trouble,,,Shop said a plug broke?? Want to replace a coil pack, remove broken plug for @ $800 or so,,,might be internal engine damage,,,The nearist Cadillac dealership said they can do it with special tools and check for damage,,sound right?? I dont know much more,,but a used engine with 47,000 miles on ebay is 1,500,,,,they want 2 grand to swap it,,thats a lot I think. Im waiting on word from Cadillac shop about doing the 1st option.

I had a plug crack once but it was easy to get out. The car was missing under load too. Replacing the coil pack seems reasonable under the cir***stances but that is about a $90 part + labour, I'd say $150 to $200. Add in a plug at about $20 and we are up to $220. So for $580 they are taking out the broken plug? I am in Canada and our shop rates are from $70 to $100 so that is a 6 to 8 hour job? I assume it is broken and inside the cylinder which has to be a son-of-a-bitch to get out without tearing off the cylinder head.

It's your call but putting in another engine is imo a recipe for more problems. Take you chances and get the darn plug pieces out of there and we will cross our fingers for you. I wouldn't do anything until you drove it for a while after the plug is out, that way you can judge for yourself. I'd be ready to hear from them that the piston is ruined and the walls are gouged etc etc.....

OK,,Here is the update: A plug broke off(or out),,will need to helli-coil it. Also a coil pack(or "tower"). One was cracked when they installed the new plugs at 100,000 miles so they put a new one on it. I think it has 2,,,a left and right. Shop told me spark plug is steel, head is alumimnum,,they dont mix too good. I told him to take every plug out and check while in there! He said he has a device to look in and inspect the area for possible damage and remove any debris. He said 800 quote (from Cadi dealership) was on the high side. Prob about 2-3 hours of work. If all else is OK. Was told this is a problem they have seen and fixed in the past,,just wanted to pass that on.Hope they can do all for around 500 or so,,,,,Do you think the dealership put plug in wrong or cross threaded at 100,000 service? Or is this just some other problem going on?

They want to put a used engine in(41,000 miles on it). Mine has a bent rod(?). Should I try to sell what they dont swap onto the new engine? Can the block be fixed? I just want to try to re coup some money back. From now on I will replace anti freeze every year. They gave me a 12 month warranty on parts/labor for $600 bucks. That might be a good thing.
