Default Is it normal for the rear differential to thump when spinning rear wheels on a lift?

When I have my 2007 CTS on lift and free spin the rear wheels the differential thumps, kinda like a piece of rubber in spokes. Is that normal?

I hear a similar sound in the winter when spinning on ice but always thought it was the tire tread.
