Cadillac oldtimer transmission
 

Hi folks,

Last week I bought an old Cadillac
It’s a Fleetwood sixty special from 1963

I’m not sure but the following could be a problem innit?
sometimes I must back off the throttle before the transmission can switch the gears.
Could it be that my transmission is broken?

Might simply need the TV(throttle valve) linkage adjusted, if it's the old Hydromatic. If it shifts thru all of the gears, even if you have to let up on it a little, the trans itself is prolly ok. Might check the linkage that goes from the carb to the trans to see that it operates freely, with no binding anywhere...:D

also check fluid level and add a bottle of LUCAS Fix.

How long was car sitting? Transmission will have vacuum modulator which affects shifting. I suggest to check condition of vacuum hoses including to modulator valve on transmission itself to be sure there are no leaks/swelled hoses(little leaks). Modulator can be checked with vacuum pump to be sure it holds vacuum, and there should be no trans mission fluid in vacuum line. If it either does hold vacuum or fluid is present in vacuum port/line - valve needs replaced.

Don't remember ever seeing a modulator on a dual-coupling Jetaway(nee: Hydramatic), but I been wrong before...my memory ain't what it used to be.:D
If the engine is a little down on power for some reason, it may be taking a little more throttle to get that monster rolling, which will cause later shifts, and having to back off a bit to make an up-shift.
Last one of these I did was in a '62 D-evil, and the TV linkage was bent all out of whack, resulting in a burned trans. After the rebuild, and fixing the TV linkage, the thing worked like a champ. :)
