96 SLS trouble codes

Hi,
I have a 1996 Seville SLS with 85K. I started getting service engine lights. I had the codes read and they were P0716 and P0717. They reset the codes but they soon came back. Now I seem to get (once and a while a service trans message.)
I'm told that these codes are from the speed sensor. What is the speed sensor and is it easily replaced? I gather it's on the trans, somewhere, but can someone please give me more info. Is this usually only a sensor issue or is this a sign of more serious issues?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to try to replace it myself if possible.

RE: 96 SLS trouble codes

Welcome, the VSS (Vehicle Speed sensor) just senses the speed of travel. It is just a electronic version of the cable design used in older rigs, just no cable present. It has a tone ring that the sensor itself reads from on the output shaft (but I do not know which side of the transaxle).

I do not have a parts book forthe number of this partthough.
