The 2nd clutches are burnt up, sounds like. If you put it in manual 1st, and drive it up to around 28-29mph, will it shift into 3rd?

Anyway...the trans has to come out from the bottom. The sub-frame will need to be removed to do this, and the engine will need to be supported.

Be very careful "swapping" the trans. There are several different final drive(differential) ratios, as well as many different sprocket ratios. The incorrect ratio will cause other shifting issues, as well as transmission related trouble codes. The best thing to do would be to have your trans repaired. :D

This probably not your problem but thought I would pass this along. My battery died along with alternator. Installed both new and about 3 days later my transmission wouldn't shift out of first gear. For some reason I checked the positive battery cable and it was loose. Next week it did it again, positive connection loose again. I went to the hardware store and bought a star washer and put it on the connection and have had no problems since.
