Hello, Just need some info please. To help out a little old lady.
1994 Coupe Deville
V8 engine-32 valve
Norstar
They broke the left side out on the steering column but did not get to start. The car will start and run with the key. Is this car driveable? Some say it might just quit at anytime. Have gotten price for used column of about $500.00. Opinions pleas of what we should do to get it back to usable status. thanks in advance.

Yes they broke the plastic housing around the column on the left side below the steering wheel. They also broke a metal piece that is on the left side of the column. The best i can describe is that it looks like they tried to get to the metal rod on some vehicles that comes fro the key lock assembly and then down to the ignition switch itself. i have no idea if this car is actually like i described. i just used a decription of older cars that i am familiar with.

have you called a salvage yard?

these colums often sell for under $100, then you can take the
parts you need off the colum w/o dismantling the car.

I  was told that if we change the column that we would need to change the chip in it? Prices we have been getting in KC Mo have been in the 4500.00 plus range. Is there any problem with driving it like it is? As i said before it will start and run as it is but we are afraid it might quit or something because it was damaged.

after reading this thread i am not sure what is broken.
a locksmith can replace the link if it is damaged, but if the
key still moves the link with ease, it should be fine.
the link goes from the ignition key to the electronic switch itself at the
base of the stering column.

if you got AAA, they will pay for a good portion of the cost if any
repairs are needed..

you can also go the our FAQ and see how we void the "chip"
if you need that.

if you only need the plastic housing, cosmetics, call the salvage yards.

i hope that helps a little.
