the rear trunk on my '03 CTS is relatively difficult to open as most of u CTS owners know.. but thats not the problem.. the problem is it wont stay open! if i am parked on an upward incline,  even small ones. it will silently yet quickly fall backwards and slam shut. first time it happened i wasnt expecting that and it nearly decapitated me.. its nearly caused permanenet brain damage to several ppl since that time and i have to keep reminding them to keep it open with one hand when retriving stuff from the truck

Anyone experience this problem?

I have a Deville so I am not aware of this problem. I am wondering whether you could purchase a gas charged strut/hinge and install it similar to hatchbacks, SUV's and your hood.

Does it have a spoiler on it?
Also make sure the trunk is open all the way.
There is almost like a detent that holds it open when pushed completely back.

If I am correct there are actually 2 gas shocks on the rear trunk, one on each side, I believe the replacement of these will cost less then a new head, and would probably fix your problems, I have seen this problem a lot on older cherokee's they tend to go through alot of gas struts.

There is a service bulletin on the trunk hinges.  Apparently a lot of people have this issue.  When I complained to the dealer, they found the service bulletin and replaced the hinges with ones of a slightly different geometry.  The replacement included painting them at no charge (I am still under warranty).

Good Luck.  Bill

mmm so i wasn't the only one.. unfortunately my warranty ran out in december last year so they charged me, but the replacement was a very reasonable price.. now the trunk is lighter than air and im not afraid of decapitation anymore

thanks Bill
