Can't believe what a chicken s#iziit problem has recently occurred on my wife's 2002 Seville STS. Twice now the button on the end of the WS Wiper stalk has popped out, which causes the washer fluid resvoir to pump out and the wipers to run continuously. How'd you like to be in the middle of city traffic on a hot July afternoon with this? I showed her how to open the hood, remove the fuse box lid and pull fuse no. 3, but I doubt that she could do this on her own. The first time, she found the two tiny springs on the passenger seat, but it took me about an hour of searching to find the little black button between the passenger seat and the center tunnel.  This time, she grabbed the button, but only one spring could be found. Fortunately, in my spring collection, I found 6" of spring that would work if cut to the right length. The button is a fairly complitcated part and of course not a parts department item: you have to buy a complete new stalk for $90. All that for a defective 50 cent piece of plastic! Anyhow, the problem with the button is apparant that two of its guide studs have retention barbs on them, and these studs have bent inward allowing the barbs to disengage allowing the springs to propel the button off. I heated them with a hair dryer, bent them back straight, reassembled the stalk and am now holding my breath that they won't fail again. For correct operation, it is necessary that the button be in its proper place. It has two plastic blades that separate to pair of electic contacts at the end of the stalk. If the contacts touch, the washer pumps and the wipers wipe. If the button is pushed and held all the way in, the same thing happens. If anyone has experienced this problem before or has advice, I will be very appreciative.
