ive got a 92 4.9 with a blown head gasket... and im plannin on pullin the motor and rebuilding it from top to bottom, i want to shave the heads so i get about 10.5-1 compression, port and polish (is there a bigger valve aavaible to put in there?) port the intake and fab up some shorty headers run a 2.5'' dual exuast with x pipe, my questions are what is avaible out there aftermarket? can i get a set of good pistons? by chance is there a better intake? cam shafts? headers? would one be able to offset grind the crank and get a few more cubes out of her? how much power have people gotten out of it? has anyone tryed a twin turbo set up?  what will the ecm be able to handle? thanx vogey

I cant believe this thread has never been replied to.  This engine is huge in the Pontiac Fiero world.  Go to Calgaryfieros.com to get all kinds of great info.  Fiero guys have been hotroding these engines for years.  You can even find plans for blueprinted engine designs.  From my experience the easies quick horsepower is that muffler.  Put a Camaro style muffler that sets transversly.  Next get yourself a Cadillac Allante Intake, upper penum, throttle body and fuel rails. You will have to modify your altinator braket a little.  And you stock fuel injectors will be too small with all this extra air.  Your stock air box will no longer fit, you will have to come up with a new way to get filtered air into the intake. I have a five speed manual trans in my 91 eldo tc.  I still have my stock injectors, but I am breaking the tires loose in second gear with dumping the clutch, its all gas pedal.  It could not do this before the manifold upgrade. These motors are great, Good Luck.

Sorry I mess up my bragging rights.  The tires are breaking loose in second gear without dumping the clutch.  Its gas pedal only.
