So its a blown head gasket.  The car still starts and drives fine, doesnt run rough.  What are my options?

What year model/what engine?  Was the cooling system maintained according to Cadillac recommendations, meaning were sealant tabs used?  If a bad gasket, it must be replaced....

I bought the car only 2 weeks ago, so i'm not sure how well it was maintained.  Its a 96 deville with only 82,000 miles. THe coolaant had been flushed and refilled. I've never heard of sealant tabs.

GM part #3634621...sealant tabs.  AC Delco #10-108.  A bag of 5 is under $3.  These are required for the cooling system each time a flush/fill is performed.  You 'might' get away from the gasket problem if you use them...maybe...but anyway they are a requirement.

does anybody know if the 03 northstar engine is prone to blow a head gasket or did they remady that problem by then, and  does the 03 require those coolant tabs at engine flushes . thanks

When I had the radiator replaced in my '96, I had called Cadillac dealer and asked about the tabs. The service guy told me that they were not necessary. He said that Cadillac put those in when the car came off of the assembly line to help seal the coolant system until the car was broke in.

BTW, I have read where there is a problem with the head bolts on this year of engine and there is a GM service bulletin that tells what is needed to fix the problem. The problem was with the head bolts stripping out of the engine block. So if you are going to replace the head gasket, you might as well check into this to see if it is really a problem.

In 2000 the compression ratio was lowered to 10:1 to try and address part of the head gasket issue. 2000 and on you are better off.

I'd use the sealer anyway. You are right about the bolts that is the main issue with the blown head gaskets. If the gaskets are gone so are the bolts and threads. The repair if around $4,000 at the dealer.

The head bolts are designed to strip their made of a softer metal so they'll be replaced with new ones when their removed.
