I own an '01 dts and she's beaut...However, I do have a minor problem that I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced. My car undergoes an oil change every 3,000 miles to the T. About 1500-2000 miles after my oil change my check engine oil level light comes up and wouldn't you know I have to add 2 quarts of oil to fill er up. I spoke to the dealership about it and they couldn't find a problem, but the mechanic said that sometimes carbon can build up on the pistons and lead to a burning off of the oil. The only solution, he said, was to do an engine soak, costing upwards of $500, which doesn't even guarantee a fix. Otherwise, I can just contine to add oil as needed and deal with the problem. For now I am just going to deal with the situation, but maybe they'll find a cheaper solution to the problem. While I'm here, the mechanic also said that bp gas in general was not good for the deville. Has anyone heard of this or what??

I have an 2000 DTS I experience the same problem with burning oil. It drives me nuts. The dealer I spoke with told me it was a fairly common problem. I have about 90,000 miles on my car and the problem seems to be getting worse.I would be very interested in hearing if you find a cheaper solution.

hey bruneau....thanks for getting back with me...i'm glad to know that i'm not the only person that has experienced this issue...i'm not glad that it happens, but i have spoken to my dealer about the issue and here is some of the information they gave me...the northstar engine can create this problem b/c of a carbon buildup on the pistons that leads actual burning of the engine oil...this can be related to the environmental issues that the engine makers had to deal with and it can be related to the type of gas that you put in your car...the best gas for the 32 v ns engine is shell gasoline...i have to admit i ceased filling my tank up with bp oil, which was my regular fill up, and i have now been using shell and at times, marathon....the check engine oil light has not come in w/i the last 2 mos, the same time i switched fuels...I would defintely give this a try b/c it seems to have worked with me...you'll have to let me know what gas you use..also, don't be afraid to punch that engine up to 6 rpms once a week when you on a straight away...that will help break up possible build up on the pistons and lessen the issue..in any event, if none of this works there is an option for an engine soak which costs around $500 and is not a 100% guarantee...what would happen is the engine would be taken apart, soaked in a cleansing sol'n and put back together....not worth it to me before trying other remedies, but possible...let me know what you think!!!!
