Most of the time the car runs good it is an 1981 fleetwood brougham with the 6.0 864 drop. Some times the car want idle out right, causing it to knock, valves rattle, and overheat driving it usually 3 miles to work on cool mornings. it appears to be overheating around the back left of the firewall toowards the heater core. only leaks when car is running rough. usually have to fill it up with about a gallon or two. I can get in it later drive it and no leaks are spoted anywhere. Please if you have any suggestions, it would be appreciated.

Hi DMN: I have the same car. It has the 368 c.i. 6.0l and has never had a heating problem, even though it is a hot running engine by nature. As far as the idle, have you tried adjusting the ISC on the left side of the throttle body???? You can also adjust the TPS which is on the right side. The TPS is more for the timing end of things, it will tell the ECM what position the throttle is in and make adjustments in the timing accordingly. As far as the heating problem, it can be a plugged rad., a stuck shut thermostat, or your timing is out of wack. How is the performance off the line most of the time??? Have improved mine substantially with the adjustments that I described above. Let me know what you find out. Chow.

First inspect if all the high tension leads are connected to the spark plugs(while engine is not running). Check also the top of the ignition coil as well as the distributor cap for possible cracks. I also suspect a vacuum leaks at inlet manifold, check that up also following to the cylinder head seals.
