Probably the fastest money anyone can ever make .. 11% drop to rise again?

"American's problem — and Alaska Airlines' cancellation of 14 flights Wednesday to inspect its nine MD-80s — stems from an FAA order in 2006 covering the bundling of wires in the backup power system for the fuel pump of the MD-80. The FAA says improperly bundled wires could rub, leading to an electrical short or even fire."

"American Airlines canceled more than 900 flights Thursday to fix faulty wiring in hundreds of jets, marking the third straight day of mass groundings as company executives offered profuse apologies and travel vouchers to calm angry customers. American, the nation's largest carrier, has now scrubbed more than 2,400 flights since Tuesday, when federal regulators warned that nearly half its planes could violate a safety regulation designed to prevent fires. That's more than one in three flights canceled over the last three days."

"American's parent company stock tumbled more than 11 percent Wednesday."

American finally just said "screw You" to the FAA. When this complaint came up in "06" American examined their fleet and found no evidence of any "chaffing" in 25 yrs of operation. Along with 25 years of "rebuilding" each plane at it's Tulsa maintanence base.
The wires in question are in the aircraft wheel wells and are examined by both maintanence and a flight crew member prior to every flight on normal walkarounds.
Six weeks ago, when this complaint of the FAA came to light, the fleet was again examined and no problems found. This week the FAA came in with a tape measure and rejected every plastic tie more than 2 1/2 inches apart. Rather than experiance the "Mickey Mouse" fines that Southwest experianced American just grounded the fleet and are plastic tying all wire bundles at well less than 2 inches if you can imagine.
Safety and maintanence are the number one words in the airline industry and believe me, no major airline will ever gamble on maintanence for profits.
In this case, the FAA decided to go on a "witch hunt." Possibly a mention of a cut in budget funding their dept?

American is obviously on their "s*#list."

That's really a tough one for the ground troops but they are trained for it. What's so darn discouraging about this whole fiasco is that there has never been a problem found on any MD80 at any time in it's history dating up to today related in any way to wire chaffing in any wire on the aircraft and Douglas has never heard of one. This whole temptest started in 2006 when someone in the FAA imagined that this "could" be a potential problem.
I'm sure the situation of the whole fleet being grounded was forced on American when the FAA bringing along the "media" stated that 15 of 19 aircraft examined had not been repaired correctly!!!
I ask you, who would you believe this story, about an airline that rebuilds it's aircraft on an hours flown and T.O and landing number with 25 yrs experiance with "said" aircraft or some government employee who might never board any type of aircraft in a years time?
(Because it is factual that the government could never examine all airline aircraft in the world today they have licensed senior airline maintanence people to do these inspections and "sign-offs") This was done six weeks ago on American. Now it appears the government wants to employ enough people to perform all these inspections themselves just as they do with the security people at all boarding gates. Let's have more bueraucracy, and let government employees "run the country."

To me is sounds like a management fiasco.

IMO, AA should have and still should post 10 ft signs with pictures and reports, as well as FAA names to inform every passenger of what is happening, what they did, and what the FAA did.

But, I'm not in charge.

Have you ever heard of making waves in town hall?
It would be great if some realistic from "day one" reporting was done.
But then again, all faith in a government agency could be destroyed!
Does anyone believe that after an FAA directive, any major airline would put an unsafe plane in the air?

making waves in the FAA town hall could be devestating to an airline. there are so many things they could find wrong they could ground your whole fleet.

You've just seen an example of it. The FAA designated American Air Line maintanence inspectors had done their job and released their inspected aircraft for service six weeks ago in airworthy condition, but this did not satisfy a few FAA inspectors and the whole airline industry in the U.S. is brought to it's knees. (And both Douglas and American Air Lines have to "take the hit" with no recourse!)
Make waves and it only gets worse! The system which has established the best and safest airline system in the world is gutted by zealous government employees!

I must wonder, why do we as a society keep putting up with this behaviour?
Seemingly a self serving behaviour!

IS not like there a bunch of politicians running the FAA .. is it?
