1989 fleetwood -> wheel cylinder rebuild (3/18/2008 2:34:09 PM)

hey im helping a friend on his brakes. We got one wheel cylinder replaced on his rear but on the other side the nut attaching the brake hose to the cylinder is too rounded off. The only wAy to get the cylinder off would be to hack saw it off. I was thinking about rebuilding the wheel cylinder so we dont have to take it off. What all do you have to do to rebuild it. And what we were to take a hacksaw to it? im thinking that it would be impossible to put a new one on. Oh and its on a 86 jeep grand wagoneer, i know its not on a cadillac but id sure appreciate some input. and maybe someone will have the same problem on there caddy.

memories .. memories.  long time since i done one of those.
i have no clue what the '86 wagoneer has for brakes .. drums?

if that is so, you can buy a seal kit and a honing tool that attaches to an drill  motor.
hone the ID nice and straight but do NOT over hone ..
get a spray can of brake cleaner.

is the hose 22 years old?  you may need to replace anyways.  or is it a metal tube/line?

it has metal lines. do you always have to hone it out? will honing take out material like boring does? and thanks i know its tuff to say without looking at it but i appreciate your help.

If it were mine and I didn't have experience honing a cyl. I would buy a new one as well as a new piece of brake line. I would cut the old line at the cyl. and remove it from the connection at the rear axle, then use it as a pattern to bend the new line.

Honing takes patience, uses stone material, like the sharpening oil stones ..
not expensive, a bit of practice makes one pretty good.

i have even "honed" U-Joins shafts on the 4x4, and that really takes patience.

if the cyl are leaking, you must either replace or hone.
I havent done honing since such parts got sooo cheap.

if you do it wrong, you flare the ends and you will have a problem.

but if you cant remove, what else can you do?
metal lines .. pretty easy to make .. home depot has the tools, i carry
those in my tool bag.

replace if at all possible .. yes.

its being a real pain, i rebuilt it and now im just trying to get outter rubber boots on but there giving me troubles. It the old school kind that the boots go around the piston but on the inside of the cylinder. Its NOT like the newer ones where the boot edges wrap around the cylinder. so they just wont go in. I heard they would be kind of tuff but geez. Ive tried c-clamping it. It not all the way in there, its leaving a little bit showing of the sides of the boots, but i cant seem to pull it out easily, do you think its in far enough?

ouch .. to give you advice on that and not be looking at it .. is really really tough.
if they arent in there correctly, you know what can happen.

If you are fond of your friend have someone familiar with drum brakes oversee what you are doing or just get a new wheel cylinder. Brakes are not the repair to guess or learn on!
