it is advisable to not drive it that way, on overdirve or high gear as it stresses the internals too much and
will end up needing a total overhaul if you do that.   when driving it, drop it one gear .. so it wont hunt
up and down, then it should be ok until you get it fixed..

the solenoid is fairly inexpensive, installation can usually be done on the car.
