Default wheel bearings

I was just wondering is there any way to check if a front wheel bearing on a FWD is defective or going to be defective soon. One thats located in the hub. I think there all sealed up in one peice but is there still a way to check the condition or to service them? Or is it just a R&R?

those things rarely go bad.

other than pulling the bearings, they can be checked by "feeling" and "listening" with wheels off the ground and spinning the wheel slowly. any scrapping sounds within should be attended to.

also, if they are bad, the wheel will tend to heat up more than normal - compare one side to the other after a drive.

when my front wheel bearings went bad, they let me know! with a LOUD low pitch resonating sound, accompanied by vibration near the floor, when i replaced them, they fell apart! they lasted 150k though
