Default Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth

Time to sell beach front property?

=========================

`NASA

Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a high chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth.

NASA had previously estimated the chances at only 1 in 45,000 but told its sister organization, the European Space Agency (ESA), that the young whizkid had got it right at 1 in 450.

The 13 year old took into consideration the risk of Apophis running into one or more of the 40,000 satellites orbiting Earth during its path close to the planet on April 13 2029.

Those satellites travel at 3.07 kilometers a second (1.9 miles), at up to 35,880 kilometers above earth -- and the Apophis asteroid will pass by earth at a distance of 32,500 kilometers.

If the asteroid strikes a satellite in 2029, that will change its trajectory making it hit earth on its next orbit in 2036.

Both NASA and Marquardt agree that if the asteroid does collide with earth, it will create a ball of iron and iridium 320 meters (1049 feet) wide and weighing 200 billion tons, which will crash into the Atlantic Ocean.

The shock waves from that would create huge 100+ft tsunami waves, destroying coastlines and inland areas, creating a cloud of dust that would darken the skies.

The 13-year old made his discovery in a regional science competition project entitled: "Apophis -- The Killer Astroid."

We'll just have to make another "movie!"
(It always seems to have a happy ending)

2029 .. isnt that about the year that the 1993 Allante becomes a collectible?
Better make some plans to move them away fromthe coastal areas .. !

Should we put a WARNING system on our websites to inform the owners in time?

I'll be 75. If I'm not dead yet, thats the way I'd want to go! Just like the dinosaurs. (We'll make history!)

lol nah it doesnt say we'll die, just that it'll flood coastal regions, so if you plan on going out like that, save up and move to key west before it hits lol

You know, it could just strike in the middle east and solve a lot of the worlds problems! (I know, "I'm just darn cynical)

hey, what do I know?
according to this, you do have the right date, just the wrong day & year.
NOT FAIR .. I was considering retirement to start on that day.

Now, what the heck is a Torino scale?

"There remains the possibility that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis will pass through a
gravitational keyhole, a region in space of about 400 meters across. That would set up a probable future impact on Sunday, April 13, 2036.

This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale until August 2006.

It broke the record for the highest level on the Torino Scale, being, for only a short time, a level 4, before it was lowered."

"The Planetary Society, organized a $50,000 competition to design an unmanned space probe that would 'shadow' Apophis for almost a year, taking measurements that would determine whether it will impact Earth, thus helping governments decide whether to mount a deflection mission to alter its orbit."

"NASA has estimated that an impact from Apophis, which has an outside chance of hitting the Earth in 2036, would release more than 100,000 times the energy released in the nuclear blast over Hiroshima. Thousands of square kilometres would be directly affected by the blast but the whole of the Earth would see the effects of the dust released into the atmosphere.
And, scientists insist, there is actually very little time left to decide. At a recent meeting of experts in near-Earth objects (NEOs) in London, scientists said it could take decades to design, test and build the required technology to deflect the asteroid.

Monica Grady, an expert in meteorites at the Open University, said: "It's a question of when, not if, a near Earth object collides with Earth. Many of the smaller objects break up when they reach the Earth's atmosphere and have no impact. However, a NEO larger than 1km [wide] will collide with Earth every few hundred thousand years and a NEO larger than 6km, which could cause mass extinction, will collide with Earth every hundred million years. We are overdue for a big one." "

this is the path of risk .. meaning where Apophis would impact if it comes to that.

source .. JPL / NASA

NASA's Don Yeomans
http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/deepimpa...e/dyeomans.cfm

"We have not corresponded with this young man and this story is absurd, a hoax or both. During its 2029 Earth close approach, Apophis will approach the Earth to about 38,900 km, well inside the geosynchronous distance at 42,240 km. However, the asteroid will cross the equatorial belt at a distance of 51,000 km - well outside the geosynchronous distance. Since the uncertainty on Apophis' position during the Earth close approach is about 1500 km, Apophis cannot approach an Earth satellite. Apophis will not cross the moon's orbital plane at the Moon's orbital distance so it cannot approach the moon either."

for the 2029 date, this is the trajectory expected:

Friday, April 13, 2029
