northstar head gasket
i know of the issue of the threads coming out of the block, but my question here is, how likely are these heads to warp, and what is a good source of reman heads? whats the chances on these motors just blowing the gasket and the head itself being fine?
my other thread talks about how im gonna buy a 94 and 96 caddy (96 needs head gaskets 94 needs lots of little stuff) and looks like i might not be able to use the 94 block/heads with all the 96 running gear (still got more research to do though)

RE: northstar head gasket
If its the threads coming loose in the block, then the heads should be ok.
I have never head one in that needed resurface or that had cracks.
If one was severly overheated or run hot for long periods of time, then the likelyhood of damage would be greater.

RE: northstar head gasket
It's not that common, i see 2-3 a year. But it is the only common major engine problem we run across.
Earlier years 95- 99. after that they slightly reduced the torque specs.
also the torque spec is reduced for the repair of older ones.

RE: northstar head gasket
No, i've been that asked before too.
It's important to use that tool set because the jig keeps the hole straight and the step drill sets the correct depth.
It's not the easiest repair to do, GM traines us using a large block of aluminum with dozens of holes drilled in it.
The one i saw had only about half done correctly.
You get one shot at it, the then block is scrap, so read the direction and if you have some way to practice a couple first it's not a bad idea.
You may be able to persuade your local dealer to let you borrow their's with a deposit. Just a thought.
