Default Oil change Intervals

As most of you know Cadillac provides no charge maintenance for 4 years on new vehicles including oil changes. I understand that their policy now re oil changes is that they will only pay for it when the oil life monitor indicates 8% or less or 8 months since the last change. Even though mine uses synthetic oil I am concerned that this is too long and too many miles especially since I own the vehicle and plan to keep it beyond the warranty period.

What are your thoughts on this?

I personally don't believe in the oil life monitor. Mobil 1 should easily last 6 months or 6000 miles. I don't even put 6000 miles on my car in a year, so I change it every 6 months. But you will get as many opinions as you get responses.
Think about this; change the oil yourself at intervals you deem appropriate but do not reset the monitor. When it gets down to 8% bring it in and let the dealer change it. Oil changes are very cheap insurance when you consider the damage dirty oil can do. It shouldn't surprise anyone that when the dealer starts paying for oil changes the accepted intervals goes way up. Thats just my two cents.

follow the oil monitor .. it works ... the GM algorhytm is a proven and reliable system. we have a thread on the subject in our FAQ section .. take a look at it.

its good for the environment, good for your pocket and it does away with the old recommendations that were DESIGNED TO SELL OIL.
