Default patticake and the 2000 Deville

ORIGINAL: patticake

I may have this in the wrong place if so , feel free to move it.
I have a 2000 caddy deville, im having trouble with a light that
stays on, it reads, check engine soon, ive done all the necessary things
i know to do, checked water, oil, put gas cap on again, and still have the
light, im wondering if there is something ive missed, the dealer is 40 miles
away, would it be safe to drive this car there, with the light on...thanks...patticake

A Service Engine Soon light is usually an emmission control error notification. If you go into the Driver Information Centre you will be able to obtain the esxact code causing the light to come on:

http://myweb.accessus.net/~090/cadidiag.html#2000

After that you can let us know teh code or look it up yourself at that link.

The message says Service Engine Soon, not Do Not Drive so you will be fine driving to the dealer.

Often a problem like a gas cap error takes a few engine cycles to correct itself. The lightmay go out in a few days.
