I think my 99 is developing a tranny problem. After the car sits, I go out and start it up and when I go to back out of it's spot it seems to hesitate then it kicks in and goes fine. I checked the tranny fluid and it's fine. Should I do a service to the tranny ?

 

I have a '99 Deville too. Mine isn't shifting badly, but it has the all too common trouble code P0741 - which means the torque converter clutch is not working as it should. My car usually turns on the SES warning light. You may want to check your car's computer to see if anything shows up. To do this, press the A/C's off button while pressing the the red temperature button. The dash board's displays will light up and then go back to normal. In the driver info. center, the computer will display current and past codes. Have a pen and paper ready because the codes flash pretty quickly (you can cycle them again pretty easily if you need to). To translate them, try this website (suggested by other forum posters).

My car goes in tomorrow to the GM dealer to get the solenoid replaced that is most likely the cause of SES light. It means eight hours of labor and a $50.00 part, or $641.00 plus tax. I think having the transmission filter replaced and fluid changed will run another $149.00. After some forum digging, I figure I better get the problem fixed before the thing really goes nuts and I ruin the transmission.

Well, things for my Deville didn't go well. The solenoid may be bad, but the real problem is the torque converter. To replace the torque converter will run about $2,800.00 or so. This is almost the value of the car. Installing a low mileage used transmission is a lot cheaper at $1,300.00. But, a second hand transmission is a second hand transmission - you never know if it's okay or about to give out. My car isn't doing anything bad except for a grinding noise every few months when I'm in parking lot. The SES light comes on to, but it's easy to suppress the SES light by clearing the codes. The cost of the torque converter repair is prohibitive and makes the transmission essentially terminal and disposable. So, I'm just going to keep driving it this way until it actually fails, which could be the next time I start the car or 60K miles from now. For now, I'll have to take my chances.
