Default 1st timer on board - overheating question

Just bought it !

leaking when hot by the overflow hose attach to the radiator cap.

Running at idle it went to 215 Far or 102 C. in 20 minutes.

The fan worked at the beginning but were not running when the heat rise up to 102 C.

I did smell gas a very little bit from the antifreeze tank

Mechanic want to start by changing the thermostat

No water in the pan, no white smoke,

What to do ?
