Default Mobil 1 or other synthetics?

I know the salesman told me that the sysytem in my new CTS is designed to run Mobil 1.
What about other synthetic oils? I'm kinda partial to Amsoil.
The salesman also told me the transmission uses synthetic, any idea what brand?
How about the differential? Is it running synthetic as well?
Still trying to get used to an automatic transmission vehicle with no dipstick. If they service it, how do they know if they have theright amount of fluid?

2006 CTS/CTS-V Owners manual:

Engine Oil
The engine requires a special engine oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M. Oils meeting this standard may be identified as synthetic, and should also be identified with the American Petroleum Institute Certified for Gasoline Engines starburst symbol. However, not all synthetic API oils with the starburst symbol will meet this GM standard. You should look for and use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM4718M. GM Goodwrench® oil meets all the requirements for your vehicle. For the proper viscosity, see Engine Oil .

Rear Axle
SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant (GM Part No. U.S. 12378261, in Canada 10953455) meeting GM Specification 9986115.

Rear Axle (Limited-Slip Differential)
SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant (GM Part No. U.S. 12378261, in Canada 10953455) meeting GM Specification 9986115. With a complete drain and refill add 4 ounces (118 ml) of Limited-Slip Axle Lubricant Additive (GM Part No. U.S. 1052358, in Canada 992694) where required.
Automatic Transmission
DEXRON®-III Automatic Transmission Fluid. Look for "Approved for the H-Specification" on the label.
2007 CTS uses Dextron VI

GM techs are trained to check trans fluid level. Make sure the tech servicing your car has this training or is familiar with the procedure.

I just changed my oil this afternoon with Mobil 1. I would think any of the synthetics would meet GMs standard.
Very easy to change 13 mm wrench for drain plug and I used a 24 mm socket for the filter housing cap.

I bought 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 5W-30 at Walmart for $21.74 and sigle qt bottle for $4.49 at Advanced Auto.
I ordered the AC 2129 filters on line from advanced for $6.44 ea with shipping it was same price as the Fram filters
they had on hand at Walmart.

Steve:

I'm not real familair with AMsoil, but I've heard it works well. We've had this debate on the Lotus Esprit forum for years about which synthetic to use. One glaring thing we all discovered is Mobil-1 is one of a few what we deemed true synthetic oils. Several years ago the SAE definition of a synthetic was changed to include oils made from crude oil base stocks (the stuff from the ground) IF they had certain types of additives. Mobil-1 is a true manufactured synthetic oil as is Valvoline, Redline and Amsoil. Different formulas for Redline and Amsoil, but still true synthetics. I've used nothing but Mobil-1 for years and have never had an oil related engine issue including four turbocharged Lotus Esprits.

Castrol SYNpower works well with the standards of GM for the CTS, or Valvoline.. I wouldn't tread outside those 3 brands though. Just make sure its full synthetic and the weight of the oil is the same, it shouldn't make any difference
