I have been getting this error for a few weeks now. It comes and goes. When it does happen all the lights come on for the park, reverse, 1st second and third. Then there is the gear selcetion erro in the driver info center. I was told I may need a new switch. Is this a hard thing to get too?

You either have a bad neutral switch, or a wiring issue between the switch and the ECM.

 

Thanks for the reply! I had a friend about a month ago put in a new intake manifold gasket. Is it possible that somehow this could have caused it?

Anything is possible, of course!
The neutral switch is located on the top of the transmission, where the shifter cable connects. You'll need a 15mm socket to remove the nut holding the shift lever/cable to the shaft, and pull the lever off of the shaft. Then you'll need a 13mm socket to remove the two bolts that hold the neutral switch to the trans. Then you disconnect the harness from the switch. Replacement in reverse order. You need to make sure the switch is properly adjusted, meaning that the PRNDD21 lights all come one with the shifter in the respective position.
You might even want to try the adjustment before replacing the switch...it might just be off a tad...but unless someone has been messing with it, that's not a likely scenario. Sometimes, the connectors can get corroded, and cause this, too, so you might try disconnecting the harness, and plugging it back in.

A word of caution: When removing the nut that holds the shift lever/cable, be sure the wheels are blocked! It is possible that in the process of removing the nut, you could cause the trans to be shifted out of Park...not a fun thing if you happen to be parked on an incline.

Well...the info may be a bit late now, but you should be able to get the switch from any parts house(NAPA, PepGurls, Oriley's), or the dealer.

 

The Seville was down the last 10 days because it stalled and would not start. I found out the rotor was shot and replaced it today. It was burned and warped. (see attached pics) Sure don't know what could have caused that! Anyway when I took it for a test drive the shift select error was gone!
