I do a great deal of Interstate driving down here in Florida - typically going 75 mph. Do I still need to do a regular WOT or will that type of driving keep the carbon buildup down? Thanks.

do you WOT? imo, you should..... same with me, a lot of interstate driving. i'll WOT during trips often.... music to my ears!

Going from memory .. maybe slowroll can point some details?

The latest NorthStars have low friction piston rings that tend to "clog" and
i remember seeing some bulletin about a "cleaner" that is applied through the
spark plug holes to keep the rings free and working to their best.

The point of the WOT is also to that end. Keep the rings free and working to
their best and it is one of those little things an owner can do and it is recommended
by Cadillac's Power Train Dept Design and Eng -
dont remember if the recommendation is "official" or not, but it is there.

The WOT procedure, directly provided to this writer by a GM/Cadillac Engineer working
on the NorthStar project from the onset is posted in the FAQ section ...

One of my favorite weekly activities.

GM has used low tension rings since the 80's. The problem is (I started with Olds) The Olds 4 valve per cylinder V8 & L4 have such a high operating range they have some concerns with the low engine speeds automatic transmissions cause, they were built to rev up and down. The rev'ing helps keep the the engine from carboning up, including keeping rings free. I admit it is strange the GM never offerred manual trans for the 4.0-4.6 when they knew from the start these engines required some exersize that they would not get at 55-65 mph speed limits.

Not exactly. There is a procedure for doing it properly. Under General Tech Section click on FAQ section and go down 7 posts.

I've always done WOTs when the engine was thoroughly warmed up. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to doing it with the engine cold? I would imagine that it would be bad to do it cold, but then again I would have imagined that doing WOTs - warm or cold - would have been a bad thing.

There are many variations of WOT, but the recommended procedure is well writen
in our FAQ section. Flooring is NOT what it is.

In NO WAY do we recommend some of the other variations of the WOT.

Find it as Gary noted or do it the way many others do it.

tx_boy has HT4100 in a 4k+lb car he likely has to floor it regularly during normal driving. WOT only appplies to Northstar or Aurora 32v engines. WOT procedure applied to 4.1 - 4.9L, sbc, or early big blocks may cause severe engine damage. Although WOT is well known on the net, it is inside / back door information. There is no tsb that acknowledges or authorizes it.
