View Full Version : What's the fastest you've got your Deville up to?

I topped mine out at 110 MPH and then the computer cut the gas off to the engine. If it didn't have that cut off switch I could have easily got up to 130-140 MPH. In the owners manual it says that they cut off the engine there because the tires aren't rated for speeds over 110, I wonder if I'd be able to have thatcut off switch disabled if I got better rated tires?

So what's the fastest you've toped your Deville out at?

Hey 420: I see that you love speed also, had my 81 Fleetwood up to 145km the other day. Backed off because the speedo doesn't go any higher than that and i didn't want to damage the thing or the car. Yeah faster rated tires, now were talking.

180 kph, the limiter as car is equipped with S rated Michelins. That's fast enough.

The fastest I drove any car was 240, my BIL's 5.0 LX back in the day. V rated Gatorbacks on that Mustang.
Look back on that now and think how stupid it was. [sm=badidea.gif]

GM mandates top speed will not excede speed rating of tires car was built with. Indy Allante could run 155mph before speed limiter kicked in, I knew someone who did it on the D.C. beltway, he said it was a trip, never lifting as engine started misfiring. I, myself, 125 mph in a 95 SLS could of gone faster I think ,but I was on a narrow 2 lane highway in deer country at 1 am. I am courious what a euro seville would top out at.

I'm curious about what the sls would have looked like at 1am had it hit a deer at 125mph. Do not have disabled airbags while driving on a Bucks County Pa. country road.

Its just part of the things that happen when one is young and doesn't think past tommorrow, this tread relates to speed not sense. At 20 mph+ over the penalties are high.... fines, licence problems, jail, and collision and the results of it.

Agreed. As I've gotten older I have learned there is a time and place for everything.

I got my 84 Sedan DeVille to where you could not even see the needle than let off so I figure 95 MPH!!!!

143mph, oh that was in my police intersepter Suburban. ;)

Armed bank robbery just started, empty road, I couldn't resist. Was one of the first responding units too. :D Not that I really did anything but sit in the parking lot with a shotgun looking scary.

problem is that those SUVs do cartwheels when you lose traction and control at that speed.

I use to think the same thing, but I have yet to spin out in it. I do drive in 4x4 a lot on wet roads. I go through tires at about 20,000miles, other guys go through motors at that rate.

well yeah, but none of that applies at 143 mph !

BTW, what kind of tires do you use for the 4x4 ?

Whenever I see "120, 130, and 140" posted I see something posted by someone having had at least one too many bottles of beer who is moving his car that much faster to the "crusher."
(unless they are at Bonneville or a little north of Palmdale.) "Even there an extra beer helps a lot for top speed." (been there, dunnit.)

I was just curious, how can you take out the governor on the northstar engines ?

I had to test the DTS out and I've had it up to 117 before I scared myself and slowed down. I know it will do every bit of 140...maybe even a little bit more with the performance engine, but I'm trying to enjoy the comfort of the ride and the knowledge that I have the that extra boost there if I need it.

My 1994 Cadillac Sedan de Ville used the 200-horsepower pushrod 4.9-liter V-8. The 1994 Cadillac Sedan de Ville Concours used the 270-horsepower twincam Northstar 4.6-liter V-8. 1994 Cadillac Sedan de Ville Concours were a pleasant surprise: smooth, quiet, and fully equipped with good car parts (http://www.partstrain.com%20).

I personally have been 170+mph in a twin turbo 300zx and never plan to be at that speed ever again. LOL. I frequent high speeds in all of my cars, yet there is a time and place for everything.

Though the speedo only goes to 85 on my deville, IM sure I have been to atleast 100-110mph in it.

Regularly drove Deville's and Eldo's from the 70's and 80's into the triple digits heading to Reno or Las Vegas on the weekends. Took a rented Deville from LAX, actually our hotel in Hermosa, to Las Vegas in four hours. We were leading a triple digit parade of quite a motley group of cars, Caddy excepted of course. A young woman in a high-end Honda [there's an oxymoron], can't think of the brand, would occasionally work her way around us but then couldn't sustain the momentum without the DeVille acting as the wind break. These cars drive like they're on rails. Actually took a '67 convertible off road at about 80 MPH when a guy entered the highway from a side road without checking for oncoming traffic. He crossed both lanes driving me off into the ice plant and down the embankment. I drove it down and then drove it back up. Honestly couldn't tell much of a difference in the ride either way but the view up and down was somewhat objectionable.

Speaking of which, I've had the V8 AWD SRX up to 130 observed. Again, drives and rides like it's on rails. Superb vehicle.

Furthermore, had the '99 Vette Coupe as fast as she'd go on I29 between Council Bluffs and Sioux City. Coming from California and seeing an open highway on a Saturday afternoon with no on ramps, no off ramps, and no traffic was too good to waste. Made it there in an hour and 10 minutes of course slowing as I neared the outskirts of Sioux City. The speedometer indicated I was going 174 which was probably right around 170 actual. Had just read an article in one of the car rags that reported Corvette instrumentation was far more accurate than that found in Porsche's. A few weeks later I read another article in yet another car rag that described tire physics. If I'd read it earlier, probably would not have taken the '99 up to that speed, Z rated Goodyears or not. But, I've been at over 150 on the back of a KZ1000 or with the T tops off in a 69' Corvette so 170 in a C5, roof on, was like 70 in a Cadillac: Just tooling along.

The Z06 I now have has barely tasted triple digits. It's been to 120 and 130 a couple of times but just for short bursts. The road to my house used to be my race track but rezoning has led to residential building on what was agricultural acreage so take it easy now generally.

Oh, this is a long ago post here but I tend to agree that trucks today don't necessarily behave as did trucks of the past. I had an '03 Avalanche that could be thrown into a drift almost effortlessly. I accidentally exercised it's drift capabilities while making a left in the rain at an optimistic entrance speed. It was magic. I hope GM didn't lose too many of it's engineers during this last bit of government nonsense. Their products are unique.
