I recently purchased a new '06 CTS-V and it is currently in the shop getting the rear axle pinion seal replaced. Only 920 miles and was leaking pretty bad.

I have a 2006 Pontiac Solstice, which uses the same differential.
We have a VERY serious problem with pinion seal leaks, perhaps as many as 10% of the total produced, which would be around 2000 with leaks.
Many of our owners also have a whine coming from the rear differential. GM has replaced some of the rear carriers, which usually takes care of the problem. One of our owners is on his third carrier already, and yep, the whine has returned AGAIN!
We were told that the CTS was experiencing similar problems. But this forum has only two people posting about it????
I have a 2003 cts with a pretty healthy leak coming from the left rear axle seal and also a leak coming from the transmission where the shift link connects. the repair is 1300 for both peices of rubber not including labor.

I just had my rear axle pinion seal fixed on my 3.6 liter 2006 CTS with 13,600 miles. Mine would drip several times after driving and then stop.

Our 2007 leaked at the pinon seal at just over 1,000 miles. Part had to be ordered, so I thought it was rare! Got lube on both exhaust pipes and you could smell it.

Hi all new to this forum..I have a 07 and the rear pinion seal is a now a GM recall, I was getting a howl at 60 mph so I took it in and they replaced the compleat rear diff under warranty.

Was this pinion seal leak not a recall issue, I think I posted the blurb quite some time ago. Check with the Cadillac recall people and make sure you don't pay out of your pocket if it is.

I thought this was well known, but I guess not. I purchased a CPO '05 CTS in December. A week later I saw a news story that reported there was a recall on it for the pinion seal. I checked with safecar.gov and sure enough, NHTSA recall #07V589000, GM recall # NO70204 "pinion seal". It said the recall was supposed to start in Feb. I brought the car back to the dealer for a battery replacement and they told me they "noticed" the rearend was leaking and were going to replace the pinion seal under warranty. Well, I know it wasnt leaking because I checked for leaks and fluid level when I first read about it. I told the service advisor about the recall and he said it 's not a recall, its a technical service bulletin. Right. I think they just don't want to call it a recall. I'm lucky, I guess, I still have 3 years and 60K miles left on the warranty. Best of luck to everybody dealing with this issue. Mike.

well i''m new at this and don''t check this forum very much. last time i looked there was some hint of rear end problems. after reading this i''m going to check my pin seal. i have an 05 ctsv. it''s had a new water pump, the trans has been out three times. two for squeeks, once to be replaced. the trans made a moaning noise at speed and i complained about it, they said that it was normal. two months later they replace it. my car is a garage queen, just over 28000 miles.anyway i''m getting some noise from the rear, but i think.hope, it''s just worn tires, it''s hard to keep tires on it.
