The kids put the ribbons on the pups so we can keep them straight. My wife and kids take this serious. Each pup is weighed at birth and logged, then entries anre made to track progress and weight gain every other day. They are given names, this time we used birds for the boys and and flowers for the girls. If someone isn't gaining weight as they should they are given extra feedings. We have a vet who does house calls and she came to check them all out before they were one day old. She checks out the Mom too. The kids will also log things like first to have an eye open, first to walk, and even first to escape the whelping box. All told we have raised 41 pups in 4 litters with two different bitches.
Each litter has its challenges, this one took 17 hours to complete, we had one breach birth which was tricky, always a bit of a concern when a little foot pops out first and one pup required about 45 minutes attention to come around, had to suction the mucus from its nose and throat then incubate at high temperature for 30 minutes then at 80 degrees for a few hours. It is fine.
I can't believe I let my wife talk me into this but it is one of those things in life we are glad we have experienced.
