"Nixon made the overture to China in part because he had "the determination, the intelligence, and the knowledge to sense the currents in history and to take advantage of them ... As he took off from Washington that February day in 1972 he was flying not just toward China but to, he thought, a shift for the better in the United States' position in the world.'' Because China is a political and economic behemoth today, it is easy to forget that when Nixon took his trip, China was isolated from the rest of the world"
"
Kissinger, whose expertise on international relations focused on Europe, was skeptical of the chances for success of the administration's China overture. He eventually came around and made several trips to China, including a secret one that laid the groundwork for the Chinese government's eventual invitation to Nixon."

Isn't it tough to realize that she just might be the best out there?? (Did you ever wonder if you really want your next President coming from Illinois? ..Well, besides Stevenson there was this guy in the "stovepipe hat.")

Bill,
we must keep in mind that there are two viable parties .. R & D
and within each, we got LIBERALS and CONSERVATIVES and MODERATES
and who knows how many other designations ...
the old understanding that consevatives are republican simply is not applicable
atop that, i bet few of us see ourselves in the same light as others see us?
==============
zinzin,
that is an ouch for our system.
on the other hand, Kerry vs H. Clinton ?
i think she is a bit more patriotic and less of a liar?
what do you think?

I think the word is stupid rather than liar and don't knock Kerry's patriotism. With his bucks he did not in any way have to go to Viet Nam. He could have used a little influence like the shrubs father did (and in the circumstances, what I would have done) and gotten an appointment for George into a guard unit. (And I'm sure neither felt one ounce of guilt.) Or accepted a Rhodes scholorship and gone to London.
I consider myself a patriot but I have to rell you I always felt the conflict in Viet Nam smelled to high heaven, just as the one in Iraq does to me now.
I don't know how I would have felt about it if one of my sons was of draft age during the VietNam conflict. (But I might have thought of a College in Montreal, seriously)
Back to my old thoughts that we will never fail to get out of these mickey mouse wars that cost our young so much until they start the lottery in Washington and take out a percentage of Congress related to the deaths and cashalties occuring daily in Iraq, and start shooting Congressmen or lopping off some of their legs and arms on the Capital steps!

on this matter, i was refering to the present day situation and attitude, not the past.
but since you mentioned, Kerry DID have to go to Nam.
WHY? it was part of his life long plan of aspirations to the Presidency.
i read THAT somewhere. i can look for it if you like.
as to stupid rather than liar? let me ponder on that ...

It's true, Kerry planned a career in politics but it is also true that he put his butt on the line. And my lottery for Congress is not new, but something I have been esposing since 1967.
The guys that start these things and keep them going never expose themselves to any form of the conflict.

i dont know how we got into Kerry, he is a "who cares" guy
as he wont be running on anyone's ticket.
besides i didnt knock his patriotism, i simply said "she is a bit more patriotic"
which does not mean the inverse.
so .. moving on ...
18 months to go ?
