This is probley a stupid question but im not familiar with carburetors. I was wondering about cars with carburetors, u have u pump the gas pedal while you turn the ignition to start from a cold start dont you? And what about from a warm up start?
Moving your question to a tech forum.

Carb cars used in daily driving have a choke, manual or automatic. The choke plate is flap at top of carb that needs to close for engine to start when its cold. As engine warm up choke plate opens and idle speed drops. To set check manual type pull choke knob out. Automatic type pump gas to the floor 1 time, this should close choke plate. Pump gas one time and crank engine over should start. With manual choke push choke knob in slightly to keep it running, once engine has been running a few minutes you can push knob all the way in.Any other questions can be answered by almost anyone you know who was driving before 1990.
