NASCAR Winston Cup 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2, # 75 Valvoline, Neil Bonnett

Greetings,

Not sure if there are any "old" NASCAR fans out there or not, but I semi-restored a vintage NASCAR Winston Cup stock car several years ago. It shares garage space with my just purchased 05 CTS. (see new member area). The racecar is a 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2. It's the # 75 Valvoline car that Neil Bonnett drove for RAHMOC racing. I'll try to post a picture but I'm not real computer savvy.

Thanks. You won't be impressed by the HP numbers. Thats where the "semi" in semi-restored comes into play. I couldnt afford a 700 HP racing engine, but I did manage to buy a 550 HP, dry sump late model racing engine. It looks and sounds the part and it moves the car along quite nicely, thank you very much. But the engine I use most often in a GMPP Fast Burn 385. Its a wet sump, 385 HP, aluminum head, roller cam beauty I bought from GM. It's been wonderfully dependable and durable. Its hydraulic lifter so I don't have to adjust the valves after every weekend of running. It doesnt have crazy compression so I don't have to use C-16 racing fuel. But the rest of the car has been painted and decaled just like it was raced in the 80's.

Damn that car is almost as old as me.  I was born in 82 and drive a 84 Dedan DeVille but would love to see what a 80's stock car looks like!!!!!!!!!

Well, thanks for making me feel old. I graduated from high school two years before you were born!

I took the easy way out.  Used Freeware SNAG IT ..

one can SNAG just about anything off the screen, protected or not, 
into JPG compressed format.

for me, it works about 99.999999 % of the time.

I have so much to learn. Thanks for the help. More info on the car, I run a modified muncie transmission with a QuarterMaster triple disc, 7 1/2" clutch, and a Ford 9" full floating rearend. Depending on the track I'll use anywhere from a 3.10 to a 4.11 gear. Most places I run a 3.55 and I top out at about 140 mph. I've run the car at Sebring, Road Atlanta, Virginia International, North Carolina Speedway (Rockingham), Charlotte, Carolina Motorsports Park, and Roebling Road Raceway (Savannah). I cannot adequetly express to you how much fun it is to drive a car like this as fast as you feel comfortable on a premier road course like Road Atlanta! The last time I was at Rockingham (Aug 11-12, 2007) there was a CTS-V there. Thats actually what got me to looking at a Cadillac street car.

BTW, rumor has it that the CTS-V can cross the 200 mph barrier,
with some changes in the speed limiter and of course the tires.

if you like the CTS now, just wait ...

After driving a prototype, Lutz said "flat-out incredible. I’ve never driven anything like that.” In the past, the current CTS-V has suffered from "wheel hop" problems. The 2009 CTS-V will feature a completely re-done rear end with a much better rear axle. Sources say this has eliminated the wheel hop issue altogether. Production on the new CTS V-Series will start in September of 2008, and will be limited to about 7000 units annually.

Internally, GM is referring to the car as "GMX322 V S/C."

Road Atlanta is the best road track in the South.  Sebring is much better now since the new construction  of pits and grandstands completed.  Great wide track with no elevations.  You need a vette at sebring to beat the porsches, but it can be done.

I do take it to local car shows, but it is primarily my track car. I attend high performance driving schools like those offered by Porsche and BMW clubs. Its a good way to get your speed and cornering fix with out fear of the law or contact from other cars. (Theoretically). I only get to go about 3 or 4 times a year. Its quite an expensive hobby, plus taking time off work to travel.
