I just bought a 99 sls about a month ago. It runs really good, when running, but gets very poor gas mileage (9-14 mpg). The other day I ran really low on gas, almost bone dry. I let the car coast into the station, restarted it and parked so i could reach the pump. Once I filled up, the car would not start. Could it be the fuel pump? or is there anything else that could be checked before I have the fuel pump replaced? Please help me!!!!

onlinecomm,
Have a friend listen to the filler neck with the gas cap removed.
Turn the key all the way BUT..... don't start the car.
Your friend should be able to hear the pump prime (or run) for about 3-4 sec's.
turn the key off, and wait about 20 sec's and try again just for verification.
Let us know what was heard...
