I was wondering what factor ie. engine, model numbers or characteristects determines whether or not an '88 Brougham has the 305 or 307 V8 engine.  The emblem says 5.0 liter, although that could mean either or.  Anyone know?

For 1985 to 1988 Fleetwood, to my knowledge, in the US, there were three engines:

4.3L LS2 diesel V6,  4100,  4500

mated to these transmissions:
THM440  for the FWD
4T60 for the RWD.

and the 4900 coming in 1989 with a 4T60E

Did you mean another year?

I am almost positive now that from 85 to 90, the rear wheel drive brougham was equipped with a carburated 307 Oldsmobile Engine.  It was replaced in 91 by a fuel injected 305 chevy.  So that being the case mine is a 307, and because it is carburated as well.

I dont know then.
Aside from the size, in CA, I believe that just about every engine went fuel injected around '86 / '87.

Maybe someone that knows will chime in.
